Yokohama City / The Short Summary Of Yokohama-shi
Yokohama City is the secondary largest city in Japan. It is not only its
population, but also its industrial amount, so the trade amount of Yokohamako
port is the largest port in Japan, and the visitors for sightseeing is
over 40 million. They show that Yokohama is the important city in Japan.
The cultivation around the region started in the 12the century in Kamakura Period. Along Turumigawa, Kashiwaogawa and Tamagawa river, Kamakura Shogunate cultivated the lands. And it built Rokururaminato prot along the Tokyo Bay to be a marine gate of Kamakura, so the port and Kangawaminato port developed in fishing and shipping business.
The city name Yokahama first appeared in 1442, a files kept in Hoseiji Temple in Minami-ku has the name in, it told that Yokohama village where was on the center of the present Yokohama city is, so it was in Kannai in Naka-ku now.
During Edo period, the 3 post towns, Kanagawa-juku, Hodogaya-juku and Totsuka-juku led the development of the region. Especially Kangawa-juku was flourished since it had Kanagawaminato port, the important point of the marine traffic in the Tokyo Bay. But Yokohama village was a small village with 100 houses.
At arrival of the Matthew Perry squadron, Yokohama village's destiny was changed. In 1853, the United States Fleet commanded by Commodore Perry came to Japan to ask Japan to open ports. Edo Shogunate treated them at Yokohama village to get negotiations. In 1854, the Treaty of Kanagawa was concluded betuween Japan and the United States at Kanagawa village, and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed in 1858 on the ship near Kangawa, the treaty decided that Kanagwaminato port would open to USA. Nevertheless, the Shogunate put the residence for foreigners in Yokohama village to avoid putting it on Kanagawaminato port flourished in the Tokaido Highway. Then the facilities were provided for being an international port soon, the Yokohamako Port opened July 1st of 1859. The history of the international gate city Yokahama has started and developed as the international city. the first railroad from Shinbashi Station in Tokyo to Yokohama was built in 1872, and the Yokohama constracted the first water service in Japan in 1889. Yokohama led and contribute to Japan to modernize.
There are many popular and attractive landmarks in Yokohama, Sankeien Garden, a famous Japanese garden, Yokohama China Town, many Chinese restaurants and shops, Yokohama Marin Tower, a great spot to look out the Tokyo Bay, etc give visitors much inspirations of the Japan modernization.
