Government-managed Yahata Steelworks
Government-managed Yahata Steelworks once had been the largest steelworks
in Japan. Sometimes, it is called Imperial Steelworks. To modernize and
develop the industry, in 1896, Maiji government planned to build a government-managed
steelworks to supply great amount of steels for growing domestic demands
and decided it in the Diet. In 1897, they started to build in Yahata village
in Fukuoka prefecture. In 1901, Yahata Steelworks started to produce steel.
First, the whole steel production would be 60,000 tons, then the steel
produced at Yahata had reached 70 to 80% of whole steel production in Japan.
So Yahata Steelworks had led the steel industry in Japan. Goverment-managed
Yahata Steelworks had contributed to modernize Japan and to develop the
steel industry in Japan. July 5th of 2015, Government-managed Yahata Steelworks
including First Head Office, Former Forge Shop and Repair Shop, became
one of the world heritage. Now the buildings of Government-managed Yahata
Steelworks belong to Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Co, so the buildings
are not opened to public. Then Kitakyushu City prepares a space to be able
to look at First Head Office outside the factory.
