Soja City / The Short Summary Of Soja-shi
Soja City is located on the lower Takahashigawa river in the southern
part of Okayama prefecture. The region of Soja city had been in the center
of Bicchu province in the classic ages, the provincial office had been
where the Soja Shrine is now. The area around the Soja Shrine was very
flourished as the shrines town, a post town and an encampment of Asao clan,
so the Soja Shirine was on the center of the area, therefore it has been
called 'Soja'. (It was named 'Yatabe' in real.) This is the origin of the
city name.
Takahashigawa River flows through Soja city from the northwest to the south, so the northern and western part of the city connect to the southern part of Kibi Heights, and the southern part of the city is in the mountain area, so the urban district is formed in the basin around Takahashigawa River. Besides, culture and people of Soja city is deeply connecting to Ashimori, Takamatsu and so on had been belonged to Kibi-gun before.
Bicchu has many historical landmarks. The legend of the Prince Kibitsuhiko and the Demon Ura is known as the original story of the fairy tale of Momotaro. The remains of Kinojo Castle is famous landmarks that Ura set on his base.And Bicchu Kokubunji Temple and many Kofun tumuluses are there in the city. In ancient time, Bicchu was part of Kibi Kingdom that the Prince Kibitsuhiko founded after defeating Ura, and the Kingdom was as strong as the Yamato Court had very large territory. It was said that Soja was the capital of the Kingdom. Therefore many mound tumuluses were built in the area.Moreover, Soja City is famous for the birthplace of Sesshu who was the greatest painter in the Medieval Ages in Japan.
