Masuda City : The Short Summary Of Masuda-shi
MMasuda City has the largest land in
Shimane Prefecture and it in the western edge of Shimane prefecture, therefore Masuda City
is now on the important transportation point of Sanindo Highway, Saninhonsen
Line and Yamaguchi line of railroads and 3 national road pass through the
city, and Iwami Hagi Airport is also in Masuda City. During Edo period,
Takatsu district in Masuda was the port town (the Ruins of Imaichi Port)
of Tsuwano Han. In 1952, Masuda was organized as a municipality.
The city is the famous for Kakinomoto-no-Hitomaro, a bureaucrat served at the Nara Court and a major poet of the oldest poem collection “Manyo-shu” (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves) in Classic Ages, and Sesshu, the most prominent Japanese master of ink and wash painting in the Middle Ages. Kakinomotojinja Shrine is dedicated to Hitomaro worshipped for thousands years, and 163 kinds of flowers appeared in Manyo-shu are planted in the garden. And there are 2 gardens designed by Sesshu in Masuda City, both the garden of Ikoji Temple and Manpukuji Temple are designated as the national scenic beauties, and also these temples has some important assets. And Taikian where Sesshu had lived in end of his life has, too. Sesshu Memorial Museum preserves many Sesshu's works and some historically important properties. Masuda is actually a small city, but it would express and introduce Japanese culture.
