The Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival
The Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival is the most exciting event throughout the year in Hiratsuka City, and it is counted one of the three great Tanabata Festivals in Japan. Millions of visitors could enjoy colorful, beautiful bamboo decorations and special events at the beginning of July.
The Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival was held to console the souls of the deceased by WWII. Hiratsuka was decimated by the bombing in July 1945 since the city had some naval storehouses and facilities, the bombing destroyed about 70% of the city.
After the war, the citizens worked hard to rebuild their city fast. In July 1950, when the city almost accomplished the war-damaged reconstruction, they held an event to celebrate the reconstruction. July is the time for reaching a certain point to harvest some crops, then many farmers around Hiratsuka visited the festival, so it was very crowded. The members of The Hiratsuka Chamber Of Commerce And Industry and Hiratsuka Shopping Center Associations led to continue the event annually, so they took Sendai Tanabata Festival for a model. In July 1951, the first Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival was held.
