Fukagawa / The Short Summary Of Fukagawa area
Fukagawa locates on the eastern area in Tokyo, in the east side of the
Sumida-gawa River, has developed as the shrine town of Tomioka Hachimangu
Shrine. In Edo period, Fukagawa flourished as the collection center for
timber.
Before Edo Period, there was the sea with several small islands floating in the north part of the Tokyo Bay, it meant that most of Fukagawa was reclaimed land developed in the early Edo Period. In 1590, Ieyasu Tokugawa, the founder of Edo bakufu (the Edo Shogunate) moved to Edo, and he planned to rebuild the city. Then Hachirouemon Fukagawa and other 6 men started to cultivate the north side of Onagi-kawa River, so Fukagawa named after Mr. Fukagawa. They first controlled the flow of the river, then built some temples moved from other areas, finally people moved to.
Fukagawa was a part of the down town of Edo, so it organized the outskirt of the downtown with Shitaya, Asakusa, Honjo where common people lived and flourished some industries. Beside Fukagawa was originally belonged to Katsushika-gun in Shimousa Province. In 1622, the boundary between Musashi and Shimousa Province was changed, it moved to east at Futohi-gawa River (Edo-gawa River), then Fukagawa was in Edo
Since the reign of Iemitsu, the third Shogun of the Edo Bakufu, Fukagawa developed as the shrine town of Tomioka Hachimangu. After the Great Fire Of Meireki in 1657, it became the collection center for timber and flourished as an emporium. Bunzaemon Kinokuniya and Shigezaemon Naraya, the famous and great businessman in Edo Period, lived once there. . Bakin Kyokutei was born in Fukagawa. Basho Matsuo, Gennai Hiraga and Tadataka Inou lived in. In addition, it was said that Yoshikatsu Oishi (Kuranosuke) held the final meeting with his members how to attack Yoshio Kira at a cafe in front of Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine in 1702. That was a scene of the story of 'Akoroshi', the famous story of samurai society. These stories imply how Fukagaw flourished in Edo Period.
In the most samurai storis drawn Edo period, heros and heroines in those
stories had walked down the streets in Fukagawa. Heizo Hasegawa (Onihei),
Kinshiro Toyama (Toyama no kinsan), Nezumikozo Jirokichi and so on might
walk and visit Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine.
