Government-managed Yahata Steelworks once had been the largest steelworks in Japan. Sometimes, it is called Imperial Steelworks. In 1897, they started to build in Yahata village in Fukuoka prefecture. In 1901, Yahata Steelworks started to produce steel. First, the whole steel production would be 60,000 tons, then the steel produced at Yahata had reached 70 to 80% of whole steel production in Japan. So Yahata Steelworks had led the steel industry in Japan. Goverment-managed Yahata Steelworks had contributed to modernize Japan and to develop the steel industry in Japan.
