Matsue City : The Short Summary Of Mtsue-shi

Matsue City is the Capital City of Shimane prefecture and it is located on the eastern Shimane Prefecture. The municipal area is very large, it is stretching out to Mihonoseki on the eastern tip of Shimane Peninsula, Lake Shinjiko is on the west, Nakaumi is on the east, and Matsue city faces to the Sea of Japan on the north. Thus Matsue is known as the “City of Water”. Matsue City is very exciting city for tourists having beautiful nature and many historical assets.

There are many ancient remains such as Tawayama Remains, tumuli around Mt.Chausuyama, the ruins of Kokubunji Temple and so on in Matsue City, Kamosujinja Shrine (the National Treasure), one of the oldest Shrine in Japan, also in the city. So the area around Matsue or Nakaumi has been flourished as gate cities from Asia in those days.

The basic landscapes of the city had been constructed during Edo period. First Yoshiharu Horio, one of the Sengoku busho, moved to Matsue as the rewards of his outstanding contributions to get the victory at the Battle of Sakigahara in 1600, and had built Matsuejo Castle and the castle town from 1607 to 1611. And Tadataka Kyogoku, the lord in 1634, developed the city to be the capital city of Sanin Region. Since the middle of Edo period, Matsue had been flourished under Matsudaira Clan

After Meiji Restoration, Matsue was organized as a municipality in 1889 and became the Capital city of Shimane prefecture. And Lafcadio Hearn (Yakumo Koizumi) stayed Matsue in this period. He was impressed a lot from the life in Matsue. Some of them would be existed now in the City.
